Getting to Bonaire

Bonaire is in the Dutch Caribbean, off the coast of Venezuela. Since the October 2010 dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles, it (together with Saba and Sint Eustatius in the eastern Caribbean, collectively the BES islands) has the status of a special municipality of the Netherlands. Geographically it is part of the ABC islands, which also include nearby Aruba and Curacao.

Attendees coming from or through Europe can probably best get to Bonaire via Amsterdam (with KLM or Arkefly) or Düsseldorf (with Air Berlin). Those coming from or through the USA can probably best travel via Atlanta (Delta), Newark or Houston (Continental), or Miami or Charlotte (Insel Air). It is strongly suggested to book flights as early as possible. Attendees can also consider traveling to Aruba or Curacao, which are more frequently serviced (particularly from the USA) than Bonaire. There are frequent inexpensive regional flights connecting Aruba and Curacao to Bonaire.

Information about travel to Bonaire can be found on the official Tourism Bonaire website and on the InfoBonaire website (the latter is particularly detailed and useful).

Note: don't be too quickly discouraged if Bonaire at first seems difficult to get to. There are often convenient connections that require just a bit of digging to find, such as flying roundtrip to Aruba or Curacao, and from there roundtrip to Bonaire (on a separate ticket because the flights are often not combinable on the same ticket).

Tip from a registrant: booking through American Express Travel allows, e.g., US Airways and Insel Air flights to be combined on one ticket, which is good in the event of a missed connection.

Flamingo International Airport in Bonaire is very close to the conference hotel (almost walking distance!) and you can easily get to the hotel by taxi. However, if you email your flight itinerary to the FC12 General Chair we will try to arrange for vans or buses to be available for popular flights. It is also possible to arrange airport transfers with the hotel for a nominal fee.

Flight Discounts

A discount has been arranged for FC12 attendees with SkyTeam Global Meetings, valid on all SkyTeam alliance airlines (of interest to Bonaire are KLM and Delta). To receive the discount (typically 10% on full fares and 5% on already discounted fares), flights must be booked via the SkyTeam Global Meetings website mentioning event ID 2130S. For KLM, the discount is also valid for flights to Aruba and Curacao. Although Delta also flies to Aruba, due to system limitations the discount is valid only for flights to Bonaire.

A separate discount has been arranged with Continental Airlines (which is no longer part of SkyTeam). On the Continental website, enter Offer Code ZKV7647327 when searching for flights. It's also possible to book through a travel agent or United Meetings at 800-468-7022 by providing the Agreement Code 647327 and Z Code ZKV7, but booking via the website will avoid a $25 service fee and offers an additional 3% discount.

Visa Information

Most FC12 attendees will not need visas to enter Bonaire. For a list of countries for which visas are required, see here or here.

Money

As of January 2011, the currency of Bonaire is the US dollar. ATMs dispense dollars, but may charge a fee for transactions made with cards from outside the EU.
